GOP stands firmly committed to meeting debt WH - CBS News

President Obama has indicated, that it is ready to make cuts in popular programs like social security in its negotiations on the national debt with the Republicans, the GOP would consider increasing the income of the Government. The GOP, however, is not moving.

"All on the table except the increase of taxes on the American people," home Chairman John Boehner said this morning, in advance of a meeting between the Democrats and Republicans in the White House.

Meanwhile, Congressional Democrats, insisted that they defend you the social security and Medicare. They complain that Republicans are not put "all on the table" if tax revenues is not a review.

Mr. Obama now meeting with the leaders of the Congress after the talks were blocked on a plan to reduce the budget deficit ballooning. Republicans have insisted on the creation of a deficit reduction plan and the debt as a condition of voting to raise the debt ceiling - the amount of money that the Congress is technically allowed to borrow.

President and his economic team have repeatedly warned of the catastrophic consequences for the United States and the world economy if Congress does not increase the ceiling of the debt of 14.3 billion by August 2.

House majority leader Eric Cantor said this morning that Republicans are seeking budgetary expenditures that exceed the amount of the increase of the ceiling for debt that Congress will pass.

When they meet today, Mr. Obama will seek an agreement to reduce as much as $ 4 trillion in spending during the next decade, familiar with the talks democratic sources tell CBS News. In the framework of this agreement, Democrats want Republicans to agree to some fiscal gaps and increase taxes on the most productive Americans.

In response to a question on whether if the GOP will agree to fill the gaps in tax, Boehner has said, "we believe in reform of the tax system."

Tax reform, he said, would make America more competitive and help create jobs, and "is something under discussion." However, he added: "we are not interested in increasing taxes on the American people."

Boehner said that law as social security programs are important, but that spending on programs should be reduced. He said "If they are not reformed they do exist in the future".

Attached press White House Jay Carney has released a statement this morning pushing on the reports of the will of Mr. Obama to cut social security.

"The President always said that social security is not the main drivers of the deficit, we need to strengthen the program," he said. "The President said in the State of the Union that he wanted to work with both parties to do so in a balanced manner that preserves the promise of the program and no slash benefits."
