Gov't decided to postpone the vote on the proposed conversion of IDF (Jerusalem Post)

Sunday Government decided to postpone the vote on Bill Israel Beiteinu Cabinet to allow the IDF Rabbinate have the possibility of granting independent Rabbinate conversions look until this Wednesday at the earliest.

The decision to postpone the vote came as a result of an agreement between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Ministers and Eli Yishai Shas and Ariel Attias to avoid the possibility of Bill tear the coalition. As the appeal of the Shas on the ministerial decision of legislation supporting the Bill was still standing, could seriously affect support of the coalition for the Bill if it came to a vote of Government on Wednesday.

Coalition seeks to find a way to resolve the impasse between Shas and Israel Beiteinu concerning the draft law to respect the opinions and honour of the Chief Rabbinate and Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar, Netanyahu said after the decision.

Israel Beiteinu leader, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman roundly criticized Shas his Bill proposed to establish an authority coalition partner opposition military Rabbinate independent conversion.

"Position of the Shas has no relation to religion or Jewish law." "This is simply an attempt to assert its own authority over the army," said Lieberman. "Is the Rabbi army a heretic" Lieberman asked rhetorically. He continued, is not familiar with Jewish [Army Chief Rabbi]? Can not sign certificates of conversion for soldiers? »

"Israel Beiteinu does not accept any compromise, no vote postponed and no deals [scenes]." We will pass the Bill on the first, second and third readings as soon as practicable, "Lieberman said firmly."

Sunday comments of Lieberman is echo those made by Israeli colleagues Beiteinu MK David Rotem earlier in the day.  In an interview with army radio, Rotem announced his opposition to the creation of two tracks separated from the conversion to Judaism Israel.

"Two types of conversion is not good from a legal point of view," Rotem said during the interview. "Now [Shas] they create a division between civil conversions and army conversions."

He has continued, "I invited those who work on the issue of the conversions in the field [to testify before the Knesset]." The conversion of the Israeli defence forces are valid and according to halacha. They [the IDF converted] are Jewish. »

With two major coalition parties go head-to-head at meeting of Government Sunday on conversions Israeli defense forces, Israel Beiteinu threatened that the acquiescence of Shas opposition to a Israel Beiteinu - sponsored Government Act would constitute a breach of their coalition agreement.
