I am a huge tusker which seems to me in the eye back to his bamboo meal six metres. Rampant poaching means that elephants are rare in most of the India. But on the Inn River Kabini - about five hours of road in the South-West of the city of Bangalore - you can see whole herds of wild elephants. You can also locate the bison, sambar deer, wild boar, dhole (wild dogs), bear jugglers, exotic birds and the odd Leopard. Culminating point of my visit: see a deer to escape a dhole pack by jumping into the River.
Set on the shores of the calm Kabini and Nagarhole national park boundary, it was once a maharaja hunting lodge. It was taken over by the Government Indian and reopened in 1984 under the conservation Indian-born, British Columbia Colombia colonel John Wakefield, who chaired until his death in April at the age of 95. Pavilion retains something of the pragmatics of the usability of a post colonial jungle. The cottages are clean and spacious, and new Maharaja bungalows offer a view on the river and a hammock for NAPs. But there are no telephones, televisions or swimming pools. Food is a basic but delicious Indian; buffet room service is not available. You're not there to be expected, but to see wild animals.
Safari Jeep and boat are available, or try a traditional coracle, where you can locate a crocodile ride. The best time to visit is in April or may, when elephants emerge from the jungle to drink, or after the monsoon season in November and December, when the animals is rare but Kabini is at its most. Like many sanctuaries in India Nagarhole is threatened by development, then then that go the right course.
